 Lauren Brevner

Born on the 27th of December, 1989, Lauren Brevner is a Multimedia Artist. She has over 40,000 followers on her Instagram account @laurenbrevner.

Brought up in Vancouver, BC, Lauren experienced childhood in a mixed legacy family, rich in culture and motivation. In 2009, she moved to Osaka, Japan in hopes of reconnecting with her foundations.  Lauren had the pleasure of apprenticing under eminent craftsman, Sin Nakayamal. It was through her coach that she initially started her work as a craftsman. Nakayamal was simply the drive that started her excursion to self-educated fulfilment.

The arrangement of her works of art investigate blended media using oil, acrylic, and resin. This one of a kind specialized style is joined with an arrangement of Japanese chiyogami, yuzen, and washi paper on wooden boards. Her impact begins from the expressive components of conventional Japanese workmanship and culture. She tries to rehash the persuasive custom of utilizing gold and silver leaf in craftsmanship.

Lauren's artworks mostly includes her interpretation of female portraiture. She plays with polychromatic layers; the figures inside it existing in strange and isometric circles. The ladies encapsulate strength and femininity through serious quietness and facial expressions. Brevner looks to make a discourse regarding the matter of ladies and their portrayal in craftsmanship all through the ages. Her depiction of women serves to empower rather than objectify.

What I love about Lauren's work is that she incorporates pattern and vibrant colours to almost every piece. It makes me feel more confident in using textile work mixed with illustration. With my theme of post-pandemic fashion, I want to include such bright colour schemes within the art as it truly catches your eye for further engagement. I also love her choice of using contrast between the main subject and the background, the simplicity of it really makes the patterns more striking at first glance.

I think her art is very modern,  which helps me see what is on trend in terms of colour and fashion.
