Sketches + Idea development

Initial Idea
A4 brown cardboard, soft pastels and mixed media.

As I'm getting closer to presenting my PechaKucha, I needed some sketches/drawings to generate and develop my ideas. The goal was to just start something to get back to my usual work ethic.
I often struggle to use primary sources, even more so during lockdown, so I aimed to use only primary for my first sketches, this also helped me see what kind of photos I'm lacking and what type of photos I should take more of, e.g. Full body, portrait, etc.

Process + Close-ups

Final Outcome
A4 black cardboard, soft pastels and mixed media.

For this piece, I  was trying to put all of my ideas together. I wanted to use primary and secondary images that I took for my artist and contextual research. I felt really inspired by how we are adapting our fashion towards the pandemic, it's almost like an accessory rather than a protective mask. At first, I was going to a monochrome piece as I've been experimenting with bright colours quite often, but clearly I couldn't help myself! Therefore I edited the final outcome just to see how it would look like in black and white.
I really like both of the outcomes, the first one is more eye-catching due to the details of   the vibrant, red hair (in addition of small-scale Corona structures) and mask, yet the other one seems more dark and pitiful.

For the reference, I got inspired by the embellished face mask and the contrasting colour scheme of Minju Kim's illustrations.

Moving forward with this project, I intend to gather even more research as that fuels my ideas and creativity. I am currently working on a survey to find out other people's experiences with isolation during the pandemic, and how it affected their mental health, self-care, and style. I believe that the key to an in-depth project is to gather the knowledge of others and represent it through art.
