Artist Research - Jim Goldberg

Jim Goldberg

Jim Goldberg (born 1953) is an American Fine art photographer and writer whose work represents long-term, in-depth collaborations with oppressed, underserved, or otherwise marginalised communities.

Goldberg is best known for his photographic books, multi-media exhibits, and video installations for e.g.  Rich and Poor (1985), Nursing Home and Raised by Wolves (1995).
Jim Goldberg chose to photograph beautiful landscapes, people, and houses. He decided to gather all of the inconsistencies in how today's culture works and throw them in our faces, regardless of whether or not we can handle seeing the victims of this scheme. He doesn't seem to mind; what matters to him is that teenage kid living on the street or an ethnic student who was denied education due to prejudice.

The reason I chose to look at Jim's work is due to the rough style and presentation of his documented photography/experiences with other people. I like those images where quotes or random sentences are written around or inside the people he photographs, it feels like the they are speaking without needing to physically listen. " My only agenda is to bring attention to otherwise ignored and shunned lives." - Jim G. The goal within his work is to inform others of the lives that are hidden, that means truly understanding the individual you are photographing and representing. This relates to my recent survey where I looked at people's honest responses to the pandemic as I think it's important to voice my the public's emotions and struggles with their self image during the pandemic.

I plan to use the quotes from my survey and work into photographs creating a different type of outcome. Experimentation is really important at this stage and I should try everything to see what works
 and what doesn't.
