 Nan Goldin

Nancy "Nan" Goldin (born September 12, 1953) is a photographer from the United States. Her work also examines LGBT bodies, intimate moments, the HIV crisis, and the opioid crisis. The Ballad of Sexual Dependency (1986), which documents the post-Stonewall gay subculture. She divides her time between New York, Berlin, and Paris. She is most known for her deeply personal and candid photographs.

Here is a series of photos that express emotions through 'dark' shoots:

Amanda In The Mirror, Berlin, 1992
40.0 x 60.0 cm

Self-portrait In My Blue Bathroom, Berlin, 1991
40.0 x 60.0 cm

Siobhan in My Mirror, Berlin, 1992.
41.0 x 61.0 cm

What I love about these three images is that they all show self-reflection and the person's true emotions looking at themselves. Facial expressions and poses are so important in photography. I like Goldin's use of shadow and light to create a moody atmosphere that matches the person's energy, it's very raw and captures the bathroom lighting perfectly as if you were there yourself. I believe these images are trying to represent struggles since Nan's interests lay in troubled communities and the . She sheds a light on those who usually can't express themselves.
With this in mind, I too need to focus on directing my models in a way that will benefit the message I'm trying to say with how people feel during the pandemic. My project isn't about fashion strictly anymore, and I need to explore all options available.
